ABOUT THE ARTIST: Creative since I was a child, I began my artistic journey through music at six-years-old. I have always admired painting and other visual arts, but I never felt proud enough to share my art until I discovered Photoshop. Photoshop allowed me to expand my creativity freely, and I’ve been creating pieces for clients and for personal use since then.

This piece is of the “Dreamscape” style and was made with Photoshop. In this style, a digital collage is used to create a landscape or scene with dream-like characteristics of oddity or mystery. This piece is called “Floating Kingdom.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST:  My earliest “art” memory was when I was 5 years old. My Dad was painting the house and left the 5 gallon paint can and brush in the hall bathroom. I happily  painted everything as high as my little arms could reach! I painted the tub, the toilet, the toilet paper, the pipes under the sink, and the walls, a dark Kelly green. So much fun! Our lovable German Shepard gave me away when he tracked green paw prints across the kitchen floor.

In high school I was chosen for an art program 3 afternoons a week at the Boston Museum of Art. The studio was in the basement of the museum and I got to paint with students from other Boston area high schools.  I really enjoyed being in an actual art studio. Sometimes we would get to take our drawing pads outside and sit on the bank of the River Charles to draw.

I am happiest when I am creating. I love drawing, painting, mixed media, making cards, journals and memory albums.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: I have been doodling since I was old enough to hold crayons. But as I grew up and learned the style of art I liked to make, things just kept getting smaller and smaller. I often use markers, acrylic, or watercolors to create little squares of happiness!

Since I grew up in the 90's, I'm inspired by the cartoons of my childhood: Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Disney, to scrath the surface. I'm aslo creatively fueled by current animation and comics, such as Steven Universe and Bee & Puppycat.

It is commonly thought in most cultures that feathers are symbols of higher thought, spiritual progression.  The line of thought here is that birds were considered divine creatures in primitive/ancient cultures because they are creatures of the sky (heaven) and therefore closer to God.

When you find feathers upon your path it could be taken to mean that you are on a higher spiritual path (whether you accept it or not), and it may be a sign of encouragement as you philosophically travel on this path.

Finding feathers on your path is also symbolic of having a lighter outlook on life or a particulary situation.  When we see feathers in our midst it is considered a message that we need to lighten up, not take things too seriously, and try to find the joy in our situation.

Some common symbolic meaning of feathers are:

• Heightened awareness
• Light heartedness
• Enlightenment
• Prayer
• Divinity
• Progress

White feathers mean calling a truce and peace. Little white feathers are a symbol of angels and finding white feathers means an angel is watching over you or as a reminder that they are there to bring hope and comfort.

Interestingly, Koi, when placed in a fish bowl, will only grow up to three inches.  When this same fish is placed in a large tank, it will grow to about nine inches long.  In a pond Koi can reach lengths of eighteen inches.  Amazingly, when placed in a lake, Koi can grow to three feet long.  The metaphor is obvious, You are limited by how you see the world.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:  I took this photograph and many others like it on October 21, 2016 while on my honeymoon in Scotland.

Eilean Donan, or island of Donan, is recognized as one of the most iconic images of Scotland all over the world. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish Highlands.

Although first inhabited around the 6th century, the first fortified castle was built in the mid-13th century and stood guard over the lands of Kintail. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:    ’Through the Shadows’ is a concept I came up with when my personal work started drifting towards dramatic portraiture.

I first discovered photography while in high school. I began shooting with film and learned how to read light as well as create my own prints. From there I moved to digital photography and have been shooting professionally now for over 6 years. Currently I am working on a new series of ‘Dark Beauty’ which is beauty photography but with dramatic lighting. Robert McLellan Bateman (1930- ) is a Canadian naturalist, educator, and painter. As a young boy, Bateman was fascinated by his natural surroundings, particularly birds. He also enjoyed art, but did not intend to make it a career. After high school, he attended Forest Hill Collegiate Institute in Toronto, the University of Toronto, and the Ontario College of Education to earn degrees in geography and education. From there, he went on to spend 20 years as a high school art and geography teacher in Ontario and Nigeria. With his freetime during this period, he also continued to paint. By 1976, his artwork was beginning to gain recognition and he ended his career as a formal educator to devote more time to painting. In 1977 he signed with Mill Pond Press to begin distribution of his work as limited edition fine art prints.

Robert Bateman’s paintings are part of the realism genre of fine art, although he initially dabbled with representational, impressionistic, cubist, and abstract impressionistic art styles first. He was influenced by the members of the Group of Seven, a Canadian art movement from the early 20th century. Nearly all of his pieces feature an animal in their natural habitat. His subjects range from cardinals to grizzlies to whales, with birds being a favorite. Bateman’s artwork has been strongly influenced by his far-reaching travels, particularly a two year stint in a Land Rover traveling the world.

Over the course of his career, Robert Bateman’s art has been featured in more than 30 major one-man exhibitions, with most of the shows drawing record-breaking crowds. His pieces are in the private collections of Prince Philip, Princess Grace of Monaco, and Prince Bernard of the Netherlands as well as the permanent collections of many museums. He has done commissioned work for the World Wildlife Fund, the Canada Post, the Toronto Board of Trade, the Royal Canadian Mint, the National Capital Commission, and even a piece entitled “Northern Reflections – Loon Family” which was given to Prince Charles as a gift from the Canadian Government. Bateman has received twelve honorary degrees and in excess of 30 major awards, including two Queen’s Jubilee medals and the Order of British Columbia. There are three Canadian schools named after him. He has authored or co-authored a dozen books on his life, his art, and wildlife. He has been the subject of at least ten different feature films over the course of three decades and has affiliations with the board or commission of more than forty environment and art related organizations. In addition to his artwork, he started the Get to Know program to help educate children about their natural surroundings.

ART HISTORY: I was approached about some pipette tips that were going to be discarded and thought that it would be wasteful; there could be a possible use for them in arts and crafts. I came across several things doing some research, one of them being earrings, and thought to myself that I could do that, it would be fun. I have never made handmade jewelry before and figures it would be a creative journey. So far I have only made earrings, and they all incorporate pipette tips in their design.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: I initially learned woodworking from my Father and have dabbled over the years.  I began making wood drums for gifts in the early 1980’s.  The pattern of the top was based on a project included in the Mother Earth News magazine.  I have made many of these, in different types of woods for wedding presents.

Both aesthetically and musically appealing, this unique drum was hand made from wood and would be the perfect addition to any art or instrument collection. The sides are spalted maple and the top is made from cherry.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:  My earliest “art” memory was when I was 5 years old. My Dad was painting the house and left the 5 gallon paint can and brush in the hall bathroom. I happily  painted everything as high as my little arms could reach! I painted the tub, the toilet, the toilet paper, the pipes under the sink, and the walls, a dark Kelly green. So much fun! Our lovable German Shepard gave me away when he tracked green paw prints across the kitchen floor.

In high school I was chosen for an art program 3 afternoons a week at the Boston Museum of Art. The studio was in the basement of the museum and I got to paint with students from other Boston area high schools.  I really enjoyed being in an actual art studio. Sometimes we would get to take our drawing pads outside and sit on the bank of the River Charles to draw.

I am happiest when I am creating. I love drawing, painting, mixed media, making cards, journals and memory albums.

The Fallen Giant

Yelberton Abraham Tittle (born October 24, 1926), better known as Y. A. Tittle, is a former football quarterback in the National Football League and All-America Football Conference who played for the Baltimore Colts, San Francisco 49ers, and the New York Giants.

Sunday, September 20, 1964 was the 31st anniversary to the day that the Pittsburgh Steelers played their first-ever football game.  Ironically, Those same New York Giants who christened the Steelers back in 1933 were in Pitt Stadium on this day to play the Steelers.  The Steelers had revenge on their minds.  The Giants had knocked Pittsburgh out of the NFL de facto Final Four the previous year on the last day of the season.

By the second quarter the Giants had stormed to a 14-0 lead and were looking like the defending Eastern Division Champions.  New York had the ball deep in their own territory when Quarterback Y.A. Tittle dropped back to pass.  John Baker, Pittsburgh's 6-7, 280-pound defensive end, had a clean shot at Tittle and took advantage of it.  Baker drilled the entire right side of Tittle's body as he was throwing and in the process knocked Tittle's helmet off, cracked his sternum, pulled his rib-cage muscles and caused a concussion.

The ball floated aimlessly into the arms of Steelers' tackle Chuck Hinton, who waltzed into the end zone from eight yards out.  That play turned the game around, a game which the Steelers would come back to win 27-24.  As the Steelers were celebrating their defensive touchdown, a battered and bruised Tittle was kneeling in the end zone, helmet off and blood trickling down from his famously-bald head.  Morris Berman, a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette photographer, then captured the essence of what was virtually the end of Tittle's brilliant 17-year Hall of Fame career.

On September 29, 1954, Willie Mays, centerfielder for the New York Giants, makes an amazing over-the-shoulder catch of a fly ball hit by Cleveland Indians first baseman Vic Wertz to rob Wertz of extra bases in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series. The catch has gone down as one of the greatest in the history of baseball.

Willie Howard Mays was born May 6, 1931, in Westfield, Alabama. The “Say Hey Kid” learned baseball from his father, who played semi-professionally with a team from his steel mill. Willie joined the steel mill team at age 14, and then began his professional career at 16 with the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Southern League. He played home games for the Barons from 1948 to 1950, skipping road trips during the school year so he could attend high school. Upon graduation he was signed by the New York Giants, and made his debut at the Polo Grounds on May 25, 1951. Mays went hitless in his first 12 at-bats, hitting his first big league homer in his 13th. That season, he was named Rookie of the Year and helped the Giants to the National League pennant.

In 1952, Mays was drafted into the Army. The Mays-less Giants barely missed the pennant in 1952, then felt his absence more acutely in 1953, when they finished the season with a 70-84 record.

Upon his return in 1954, the Giants won the National League by five games over their archrivals, the Brooklyn Dodgers, and then met the Indians in the World Series. In the eighth inning of Game 1, with the score tied 2-2 and two runners on base, Indians first baseman Vic Wertz hit a fly ball 440 feet deep into center field. Mays turned, ran and then caught the ball over his shoulder with his back to the infield, before spinning and firing the ball back into the infield to keep the runners from advancing. The catch preserved the tie, and the Giants won the game on a home run by Dusty Rhodes in the 10th inning. When he was asked later about the catch, Mays famously replied, “I don’t rank ‘em, I just catch ‘em.” The Giants went on to sweep the 1954 World Series.

Mays was named the National League MVP in 1954, and again in 1965. He played in a record 24 All-Star games, winning the All-Star MVP in 1963 and 1968. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979. His base running, power, fielding, ability to hit for average and outstanding arm in the outfield made him the prototype “five-tool” player for whom baseball scouts search. Any argument over who deserves the title “greatest baseball player in history” has to include Willie Mays.
